HUNTSVILLE, Alabama – Alabama A&M linebacker Medrick Burnett Jr. is currently hospitalized with a head injury sustained during an October game. This news comes in the wake of a previous announcement from the school that incorrectly stated he had passed away. The athletic department issued a retraction on Wednesday, clarifying that the initial report of Burnett’s death arose from information provided by an immediate family member on Tuesday evening.

In a follow-up statement, the department expressed regret for sharing misinformation, but emphasized their relief in learning that Burnett remains alive and in stable condition. They stated, “Our staff acted accordingly to the wishes of the family member to inform the A&M community and beyond of this unfortunate occurrence.”

A message posted on Burnett’s GoFundMe page urged supporters to continue praying for his recovery. It read, “Please pray he is having a tough time but we are holding on til the very end. God give us strength so we can keep the faith.”

Burnett, a redshirt freshman from Lakewood, California, joined Alabama A&M this summer after beginning his collegiate career at Grambling State. He appeared in seven games, making five tackles, including three in a game against Austin Peay.

The significant correction highlights the importance of accurate communication, especially in sensitive situations involving health and life. This situation encourages the community to come together in support of Burnett and his family during this challenging time. The shared wish for his recovery reflects the unity and resilience of the Alabama A&M community, providing hope amid adversity.
