Minshew Takes the Helm: Raiders Name New Starting Quarterback

HENDERSON, Nev. — Coach Antonio Pierce announced on Sunday that Gardner Minshew will be the starting quarterback for the Las Vegas Raiders as they kick off the season. Minshew joined the Raiders as a free agent in the offseason and was in competition for the role with Aidan O’Connell.

Pierce explained that the decision was based on multiple factors, not solely on recent performances. “We feel like Gardner gives us the best opportunity to get off to a fast start, and that’s what we’re going with,” he said, adding that both the team and the organization fully support this choice.

Last season, Minshew, while playing for the Colts, posted a significantly better Total QBR compared to O’Connell, who played for the Raiders. Minshew had a Total QBR of 59.7 against O’Connell’s 40.5, although their completion percentages were both at 62%.

The Raiders are set to start their 2024 season against the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 1. Pierce highlighted Minshew’s experience entering his sixth NFL season as a key factor in the decision. He mentioned the importance of Minshew’s operation skills and the overall competitive evaluation during practice.

Minshew, 28, signed a two-year contract worth $25 million, including $15 million guaranteed, on March 14. In his two preseason games, he completed 16 of 33 passes for 212 yards and one touchdown, and also rushed for 12 yards.

On the other hand, O’Connell recorded a solid performance with 21 completions on 29 attempts for 172 yards, with a touchdown and one interception that was returned for a touchdown. Minshew expressed optimism about the team’s prospects for the season and noted the hard work both he and O’Connell put in during the competition.

The decision to start Minshew was made after discussions with general manager Tom Telesco and offensive coordinator Luke Getsy. Pierce praised Minshew’s infectious personality and leadership, while also acknowledging areas for improvement.

O’Connell, a fourth-round pick in 2023, has shown promise as a young player, finishing the previous season strong with eight touchdown passes in the last four games.

Minshew’s Week 1 start will mark his sixth consecutive season starting at least one game, with this being his fourth different franchise since 2020. He joins Andy Dalton, Carson Wentz, and Baker Mayfield for the most teams started with in that time frame. The Minnesota Vikings’ Sam Darnold is also expected to join that group this season.
