Minshew Takes the Helm: Raiders Name New Starting Quarterback

HENDERSON, Nev. — Gardner Minshew has been named the starting quarterback for the Las Vegas Raiders as they prepare for the upcoming season, according to coach Antonio Pierce’s announcement on Sunday.

Minshew, who joined the Raiders this offseason as a free agent, faced competition from Aidan O’Connell for the starting position. Pierce emphasized that the decision was based on a variety of factors, not just recent performances. “We feel like Gardner gives us the best opportunity to get off to a fast start,” he stated, reassuring that both the team and organization support the choice.

When comparing last season’s statistics, Minshew posted a significantly higher Total QBR while playing for the Indianapolis Colts than O’Connell did with the Raiders. Minshew’s Total QBR was 59.7, while O’Connell’s was 40.5, although both players had similar completion percentages.

The Raiders will kick off their 2024 season against the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 1.

Pierce highlighted Minshew’s experience, as this will be his sixth season in the NFL, and stated that numerous aspects contributed to the decision. “The operation, the process, and just everything we saw in practice” played critical roles in their conclusion.

At 28 years old, Minshew has signed a two-year, $25 million contract with the Raiders, including $15 million guaranteed. During the preseason, he completed 16 out of 33 passes for 212 yards and one touchdown, also adding 12 rushing yards.

In his own preseason appearances, O’Connell completed 21 out of 29 passes for 172 yards with one touchdown and one interception, which was returned for a touchdown.

After the team’s recent exhibition loss to the Dallas Cowboys, Minshew expressed optimism about the team’s potential this season. “I’m super optimistic about what we’re going to be able to do as a team this year,” he said.

Pierce decided on Minshew after discussions with general manager Tom Telesco and offensive coordinator Luke Getsy. He praised Minshew’s infectious personality and leadership qualities while also noting areas of improvement, particularly regarding his decision-making and footwork.

O’Connell, a fourth-round draft pick in 2023, had a promising finish to the previous season, throwing eight touchdown passes without an interception in the final four games. Pierce believes that both quarterbacks have conducted themselves professionally throughout the competition.

“Both be ready. In the National Football League, you never know,” Pierce added, acknowledging O’Connell’s potential future as a starter in the league. This will mark Minshew’s sixth consecutive season starting at least one game, making his fourth different franchise since 2020, tying him with several other notable quarterbacks in that timeframe.
