Minnesota Braces for Thanksgiving Snowstorm: Will Travel Be Affected?

A winter storm is set to sweep through Minnesota just ahead of Thanksgiving, potentially marking the season’s first measurable snowfall in the Twin Cities by Wednesday morning. The storm is predicted to bring varying levels of precipitation, with regions to the north potentially experiencing significantly more snow.

The initial phase of the two-part storm arrived on Monday evening, bringing rain to the area. The later phase, expected on Tuesday, is forecasted to deliver rain in the south and snow in the northern regions. A NEXT Weather Alert has been issued and will remain in effect until Wednesday.

This storm system has notably shifted southwards, increasing the potential snowfall totals in the Twin Cities area. By Wednesday morning, the forecast predicts up to 5 inches of snow accumulation in the Twin Cities, while nearby areas such as Plymouth, Andover, and Forest Lake might see totals reaching 8 inches.

Further north, central and northern Minnesota is expected to bear the brunt of the snowfall. Cities like St. Cloud and Brainerd could receive between 5 to 8 inches of snow, while Hinckley may see totals ranging from 8 to 12 inches, according to NEXT Weather Meteorologist Joseph Dames.

In contrast, areas south of the Twin Cities, including Mankato and Rochester, are likely to experience lighter snowfall, accumulating only 1 to 3 inches. The weather conditions are poised to complicate Thanksgiving travel on Wednesday morning, with strong wind gusts of 30 to 40 mph possibly leading to reduced visibility on the roads.

Travelers are advised to exercise caution, allowing extra time for their journeys. As the storm continues to develop, snowfall totals may vary, emphasizing the need for continued monitoring of forecasts. The Southwest region of Minnesota is expected to see minimal accumulation, although predictions might fluctuate as further data becomes available.

With a potential winter wonderland taking shape, many are hopeful for a picturesque Thanksgiving, despite the challenges posed by winter weather conditions.
