Severe thunderstorms are anticipated across northern Minnesota late Friday night into early Saturday, with an enhanced risk for severe weather particularly pronounced in areas north of Brainerd. The Twin Cities may experience storms around sunset.
As a warm front shifts northward on Friday night, storms are expected to develop shortly after sunset. While initial activity could occur along the Interstate 94 corridor, the more likely scenario involves storms forming farther north, especially near Mille Lacs and Brainerd. These storms could rapidly expand into clusters or a continuous line impacting much of northern Minnesota and northwestern Wisconsin throughout the night.
Forecasts indicate the possibility of gusty winds, large hail, and isolated tornadoes across northern Minnesota. Should storms consolidate into a line, wind damage could be widespread, with gusts reaching up to 80 mph.
Timing for these storms is projected between midnight and 2 a.m. on Saturday for northern regions, while the Twin Cities might see activity around sunset.
Looking ahead to the weekend, residents can expect hot, breezy conditions with temperatures soaring into the 90s and heat index values climbing into the triple digits. An extreme heat warning will be in effect from Saturday noon until 9 p.m. on Sunday for many areas in central and southern Minnesota, accompanied by a heat advisory for northern parts.
Following this intense heat, storm chances are expected to return early next week, bringing a shift to more comfortable temperatures in the 70s.
This weekend’s weather highlights the need for residents to remain vigilant and prepared for severe weather conditions, while also taking precautions against extreme heat.
