Minneapolis is currently hosting two significant celebrations, Twin Cities Pride and Somali Independence Day, attracting approximately half a million visitors to the city. The atmosphere is vibrant, filled with joy and unity as participants celebrate their identities and cultures.
Sophia Turner, a local resident, expressed the enthusiastic spirit by stating, “The energy is incredible. Everyone’s happy to be here. Everybody’s celebrating each other.” Ayub Hassan, who owns Blue Horn Somali Tea and participated in Somali Day, emphasized the importance of the event, saying, “We want people to understand who we are,” as they commemorate Somalia’s independence from colonial rule in 1960.
The combined festivities have drawn crowds equivalent to the population of Wyoming, highlighting Minneapolis as a diverse and inclusive city. Pritchard, a participant, remarked on the significance of the celebrations, noting that “everyone can be themselves; if you’re an ally or part of the LGBTQIA+ community.” Turner added, “The community we’re celebrating can be at a disadvantage, so it’s important.”
Amid the celebrations, safety is paramount. To accommodate the influx of visitors, Metro Transit has expanded its services, offering free rides throughout the weekend. This initiative ensures that everyone can enjoy the events without transportation concerns.
Community members are also bringing their families to experience the celebrations. Minnetrista resident Mike Schoeneman attended with his daughters, saying he wanted to “celebrate the cultures and everything and to show my girls the differences too.”
As Twin Cities Pride continues on Sunday, June 29, with a parade kicking off at 11 a.m., the shared joy and cultural pride are palpable, showcasing Minneapolis’s commitment to diversity and inclusivity.
