The Miami Dolphins are reportedly seeking to trade All-Pro safety Minkah Fitzpatrick, just under a year after re-acquiring him from the Pittsburgh Steelers. NFL insider Jordan Schultz broke the news on Wednesday, highlighting Fitzpatrick’s uncertain future as part of a broader shakeup in Miami. The team recently released four veteran players, including renowned wide receiver Tyreek Hill, and is actively engaging in trade discussions surrounding quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.

Fitzpatrick, a five-time Pro Bowler and three-time first-team All-Pro during his tenure with the Steelers from 2019 to 2024, faced a drop in production in his first season back with the Dolphins. In 14 games, he logged 82 tackles, four tackles for loss, six passes defended, two quarterback hits, one sack, one interception, one forced fumble, and two fumble recoveries—the lowest statistical output since his rookie season in 2018.

Though the Dolphins are exploring trade options for Fitzpatrick, the Steelers are prohibited from re-acquiring him at this time. NFL rules dictate that Pittsburgh can only bring Fitzpatrick back if his contract expires and he becomes a free agent, if he is placed on waivers, or after two years have elapsed since his trade to Miami.

The Steelers currently face uncertainty at the safety position following Fitzpatrick’s departure. They let go of their opening-day starter, Juan Thornhill, during the 2025 season and shifted Jalen Ramsey from a slot cornerback role to free safety. This trade, which brought Ramsey and Jonnu Smith to Pittsburgh, has prompted discussions about Ramsey’s long-term position as the team navigates its 2026 roster decisions.

Fitzpatrick has one season remaining on his current contract, with a salary of $15.6 million set for 2026. If the Dolphins were to trade or release him before June 1, it would incur a $13 million dead cap hit but save the team over $5.8 million against the cap. However, releasing Fitzpatrick outright would result in a staggering $99 million dead cap hit for the organization.

As the offseason progresses, it remains to be seen how these developments will unravel, particularly for the Dolphins, who are regarded as a team in transition and looking to reshape their roster for future competitiveness.
