Australian golfing sensation Minjee Lee has achieved a remarkable feat by capturing her third major championship, solidifying her place in the elite circle of Australian golfers. By winning the women’s PGA Championship on Monday morning, Lee not only triumphed over the competition by three shots but also became the fourth Australian to win three majors, joining the ranks of Karrie Webb, Jan Stephenson, and Peter Thompson.
This victory adds to her accolades, which already include the 2022 US Women’s Open and the 2021 Evian Championship. Lee’s impressive record now stands at 11 professional wins, including her three major titles, suggesting a promising path toward a future in the Hall of Fame.
Emotions ran high as Lee celebrated her victory, visibly moved after sinking the decisive putt and finishing at 4-under par, one of only three players to end the tournament under par. The championship came with a historic prize purse of $18.5 million, of which Lee will receive about $2.8 million.
On the green, she was joyfully engulfed by fellow competitors, including compatriots Hannah Green and Steph Kyriacou, who showered her with champagne. Lee’s parents were pivotal supporters, with her mother witnessing the win live while her father cheered from home in Perth. Reflecting on her achievement, Minjee Lee expressed pride in joining the ranks of Australia’s golfing greats: “It’s really cool, especially being only a few of us (Aussies) who have done it so far. It’s a really special feeling.”
