Ministers Alitia Bainivalu and Sashi Kiran have called for ongoing vigilance and community support in the fight against breast cancer, emphasizing the importance of early detection and collective action as Breast Cancer Awareness Month comes to a close. This message was conveyed during a Pinktober morning tea event hosted at the Pacific Fishing Company in Levuka.
Minister Bainivalu, responsible for Fisheries and Forestry, drew on her personal connection to the community, stating that breast cancer not only impacts patients but also affects entire families. She urged local communities to stand by survivors, honor those they’ve lost, and encourage women to prioritize their health by getting screened regularly. “Breast cancer is a cruel illness that touches not just individuals but entire families,” she noted, expressing her solidarity with affected women and their support systems.
Simultaneously, Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, Sashi Kiran, officiated a breast cancer awareness program in Rakiraki, which attracted around 100 participants from neighboring communities. Kiran emphasized that awareness should extend beyond October and called for continual discussions around breast cancer in homes, communities, workplaces, and schools.
Both ministers highlighted the critical need for education, early detection, and ongoing community support. They stressed that collaborative efforts are essential for ensuring that no one faces the challenges of cancer alone.
This call to action coincides with remarks made by health officials during recent awareness celebrations, where rising cancer incidence rates amongst all genders were discussed. It has become increasingly clear that the fight against cancer must focus on proactive measures like education about treatment options and the provision of resources, especially in rural areas where access to vital information can be limited.
