The Fiji Airways Fiji men’s sevens team is gearing up for the upcoming tournaments in Singapore and Perth, part of the second leg of the HSBC Sevens Series. As they aim to defend their title and enhance their performance, mental resilience has emerged as a crucial aspect of their preparation.

Head coach Osea Kolinisau believes that the ability to withstand psychological pressure will differentiate champions from simply skilled athletes. To cultivate this resilience, Kolinisau has designed training sessions that replicate high-stress situations, pushing players to their limits and ensuring they can perform effectively even when fatigued. He emphasized the importance of maintaining focus under challenging conditions, stating, “We’re trying to push the boys, especially in training, getting them tired, fatigued, and then pushing them to do the hard stuff, especially defending when they’re really tired.”

The upcoming competition in Singapore, scheduled for January 31 to February 1, is particularly significant as the team looks to replicate its success from last year, where they secured a victory against Kenya with a score of 21-12. The pressure to perform is mounting, but Kolinisau’s emphasis on mental toughness could not only improve individual performances but also foster team unity and strength.

As the squad approaches these vital tournaments, the atmosphere is electric with anticipation. Their focus on mental preparation positions them strongly to meet the challenges ahead, showcasing the essential role that psychological fortitude plays in achieving excellence in sports.
