Authorities announced on Thursday that their investigation into an explosion at the Trump Hotel in Las Vegas, which tragically resulted in one death, has focused on a decorated U.S. Army soldier, Matthew Alan Livelsberger. However, crucial aspects, particularly the motive behind the incident, remain unclear.
During a news conference, officials disclosed that identification belonging to Livelsberger, a 37-year-old master sergeant and member of the elite special forces, was discovered at the scene. The incident involved a Tesla Cybertruck that was engulfed in flames after an improvised explosive device detonated in its bed. Livelsberger had rented the vehicle from Turo.
Tragically, Livelsberger was confirmed deceased at the scene, which was corroborated by two senior law enforcement officials prior to the news briefing. Sheriff Kevin McMahill of the Clark County/Las Vegas Metropolitan Police addressed rampant social media speculation surrounding Livelsberger’s involvement, emphasizing that no evidence suggests he acted in conjunction with any larger operation. According to McMahill, “We don’t believe there’s any further threat or anyone associated with him in Las Vegas.”
Despite the presence of military identification, a passport, and credit cards in Livelsberger’s name, the body found in the Cybertruck was severely burned, complicating the identification process. Investigators are awaiting DNA confirmation but possess other indicators, such as distinctive tattoos on the body. Additionally, two handguns, one of which was a .50-caliber Desert Eagle, were discovered at the scene. Preliminary findings indicate the body sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is continuing to investigate the explosive device, which appears to involve consumer-grade fireworks, mortars, and aerial shells. The incident is being treated as a potential terrorist attack, with officials thoroughly examining tips related to Livelsberger’s military background.
Livelsberger had an extensive military career, serving multiple deployments overseas. His commendations include several Bronze Star medals, indicating his bravery and dedication. As the investigation developed, federal agents were seen searching a residence linked to Livelsberger in Colorado Springs.
Interestingly, the Las Vegas explosion coincided with a separate incident in New Orleans, where a driver, identified as a U.S. Army veteran, plowed into a crowd during New Year’s Eve festivities. Both events occurred within hours of each other, raising questions among officials about potential connections, though they have stressed that no direct links have been confirmed.
The rental company, Turo, stated they are cooperating fully with the investigation and have confirmed neither individual associated with the attacks had prior criminal backgrounds that could have flagged them as security risks.
As this investigation progresses, it highlights not only the complexities of incidents involving individuals with military backgrounds but also the ongoing need for vigilance and awareness in public safety. The resilience of communities in the face of such tragedies is notable, and authorities aim to uncover the truth behind these distressing events for the sake of healing and security.
