A high school student from Milford, Massachusetts, was taken into custody by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials while en route to volleyball practice, sparking concern and feelings of helplessness within the local community. The incident occurred on Saturday morning and involved a junior known for his outstanding contributions in sports and music at Milford High School.
Andrew Mainini, the student’s volleyball coach, described him as an “exceptional citizen” who brings joy to others. He learned about the student’s detention through a text message sent by a witness. Meanwhile, two other students who were in the vehicle with him were released, as they were identified as minors.
Milford Police Chief Robert Tusino confirmed that he is aware of the situation and is monitoring it, although he stated that his department was not involved in the arrest. Efforts to obtain comments from the Milford school superintendent and ICE officials have not been successful.
In response to this distressing event, the community plans to hold a peaceful protest at Town Hall on Sunday, reflecting their solidarity and support for the detained student.
This incident highlights the ongoing tension surrounding immigration enforcement in communities, especially regarding the impact on young individuals and their families. Engaging in dialogue and community solidarity during such challenging times can foster a supportive environment for those affected.
