Mikie Sherrill is set to take office as New Jersey’s 57th governor, marking a historic moment as she becomes the first Democratic woman to hold this position in the state’s history. The swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for Tuesday morning at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark, where she will officially assume the title of governor-elect.

Shortly after taking office, Sherrill plans to act on her campaign promise to declare a state of emergency aimed at freezing high energy rates in New Jersey. Despite facing potential legal challenges, she remains committed to lowering energy costs and expanding power generation within the state, emphasizing these issues as her primary objectives.

In a demonstration of her engagement with communities ahead of her inauguration, Sherrill spent Monday participating in service projects in Camden and Trenton, coinciding with Martin Luther King Jr. Day. “You will know that I will never forget South Jersey,” Sherrill said, underscoring her intention to represent and connect with all regions of the state.

Turning 54 just a day before her inauguration, Sherrill brings a wealth of experience to her new role. She previously served as a member of Congress, worked as a federal prosecutor, and dedicated nine years to the Navy as a helicopter pilot. A devoted wife and mother of four, she succeeds Phil Murphy, who completed his two-term limit in office.

Sherrill’s inauguration will lead New Jersey into a notable period, with her party now poised to hold the governor’s office for three consecutive terms, a trend not seen since the 1960s. As the day unfolds, Action News will be covering all significant events surrounding her swearing-in.
