A United Airlines flight traveling from Lagos, Nigeria, to Washington, DC, was forced to make an emergency landing early Friday due to a reported technical issue. The Boeing 787-8 aircraft experienced what the airline described as “an unexpected aircraft movement,” prompting the flight, designated UA613, to return shortly after takeoff.

Upon landing safely back in Lagos, six individuals, comprising four passengers and two flight attendants, were taken to the hospital for injuries but have since been discharged, according to a statement from United Airlines. The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) also reported that an additional 27 passengers and five crew members sustained minor injuries during the incident.

Videos shared on social media depicted chaotic scenes inside the cabin, with food and personal items scattered about and passengers appearing visibly alarmed. The flight was carrying a total of 245 passengers, along with eight flight attendants and three pilots.

United Airlines has stated that they are coordinating with both US and Nigerian aviation authorities to investigate the cause of the unexpected issue. FAAN has confirmed that the aircraft did not suffer any major damage during the incident.

This incident follows a FAA order affecting hundreds of Boeing 787s in 2024, which was initiated after concerns arose from a similar incident involving a Latam Airlines jet that unexpectedly dropped while in flight.

While the event was undoubtedly unsettling for those on board, the rapid response and eventual safety of the passengers and crew is a positive note amidst the situation. As investigations continue, the priority remains on ensuring the safety of air travel and addressing any underlying technical issues with aircraft.
