In the trailer for Bong Joon Ho’s upcoming film Mickey 17, Robert Pattinson seemingly goes to great lengths for science, portraying a character named Mickey who volunteers as an “expendable” in a futuristic setting where he endures repeated deaths.
The comedic preview showcases Pattinson, who adopts a unique American accent, experiencing a variety of violent deaths as part of his research duties, only for his body to be recreated each time he dies. The chaos escalates when two versions of Mickey coexist simultaneously, leading to both turmoil and excitement.
Mickey 17 features a star-studded cast, including Naomi Ackie, Steven Yeun, Toni Collette, and Mark Ruffalo, and serves as Joon Ho’s anticipated follow-up to his Oscar-winning film Parasite. The movie is adapted from the novel Mickey 7 by Edward Ashton and is set to hit theaters on January 31, 2025.
The official synopsis describes the film: “From the Academy Award-winning writer/director of Parasite, Bong Joon Ho, comes his next groundbreaking cinematic experience, Mickey 17. The unlikely hero, Mickey Barnes (Robert Pattinson), finds himself in the extraordinary situation of working for an employer who requires the ultimate commitment to the job… to die, for a living.”
Bong Joon Ho won three Academy Awards for Parasite, released in 2019, including Best Director. He is also known for directing Okja, Snowpiercer, and The Host, with several of his long-time collaborators, such as cinematographer Darius Khondji and editor Yang Jinmo, contributing to Mickey 17.
Pattinson’s recent work includes his role as Bruce Wayne in The Batman and providing voice work for the English-language version of Hayao Miyazaki’s animated film The Boy and the Heron.
