In the trailer for Bong Joon Ho’s upcoming film Mickey 17, Robert Pattinson takes on the role of Mickey, a man who volunteers to be deemed “expendable” in a futuristic setting. The comedic preview showcases Pattinson adopting an unusual American accent while depicting the character’s unique fate: facing repeated deaths as part of a research experiment, with his body recreated each time he dies. The chaos escalates when two versions of Mickey coexist at the same time.
The film features a talented cast, including Naomi Ackie, Steven Yeun, Toni Collette, and Mark Ruffalo, and is highly anticipated as Joon Ho’s follow-up to his Oscar-winning film Parasite. It is based on Edward Ashton’s novel Mickey 7 and is set to be released in theaters on January 31, 2025.
The official synopsis reveals, “From the Academy Award-winning writer/director of Parasite, Bong Joon Ho, comes his next groundbreaking cinematic experience, Mickey 17. The unlikely hero, Mickey Barnes (Robert Pattinson), finds himself in an extraordinary position working for an employer that demands the ultimate commitment to the job… to die, for a living.”
Bong Joon Ho won three Oscars for Parasite in 2019, including Best Director. His notable previous works include Okja, Snowpiercer, and The Host. Many of his long-time collaborators, such as cinematographer Darius Khondji and editor Yang Jinmo, also contributed to Mickey 17.
Robert Pattinson recently portrayed Bruce Wayne in The Batman and provided voice work for the English-language version of Hayao Miyazaki’s animated film The Boy and the Heron.
