Mickelson’s Last Chance: The U.S. Open Awaits

Phil Mickelson is set to compete in the upcoming U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club in Pittsburgh, where he may face his last opportunity to complete the career Grand Slam. The six-time major champion, who will turn 55 on June 16, noted that this year marks the final season of his five-year exemption earned from winning the 2021 PGA Championship at Kiawah Island, where he made history as the oldest major championship victor.

Renowned for his impressive record, Mickelson has finished as the runner-up at the U.S. Open six times, making it the only major title that eludes him. Completing the Grand Slam would align him with just six other golfers in history, a list that recently welcomed Rory McIlroy after his Masters win in April.

During a press conference linked to this week’s LIV Golf League tournament at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club, Mickelson expressed ambivalence regarding the potential finality of this U.S. Open appearance. While acknowledging the likelihood that it could be his last chance for the coveted title, he stated, “I haven’t thought about it too much.” When prompted about future U.S. Open qualifiers should he fail to secure exemption, he admitted he had yet to contemplate that scenario.

This year has also seen the U.S. Open pave the way for LIV Golf players by introducing a new exemption rule, which allows for a direct entry spot in the tournament for the leading player in the individual points standings as of May 19. For 2026, the criteria will extend to the top golfer in the final standings if they are not already exempt and finish in the top three.

Mickelson, who currently ranks 1,162nd in the Official World Golf Ranking, has a lifetime exemption for Augusta National and can also partake in the Open Championship until he turns 60, having clinched the Claret Jug in 2013.

With his ongoing role as a playing captain for HyFlyers GC in the LIV Golf League, Mickelson hinted at the possibility of stepping back from competition if his performance no longer contributes positively to his team’s success. “I want this team to succeed,” he stated, emphasizing his commitment to being a valuable asset. Currently positioned 15th in the individual points standings, he has seen a resurgence in form this year, showing promise as he competes with hopes of helping his team thrive.

Mickelson’s story is a testament to resilience and determination in the world of golf. As he approaches this pivotal moment in his career, fans and fellow players alike will be watching closely, hoping to witness a historic moment that could define his legacy.
