Michigan’s Future Shines Bright with Five-Star QB Bryce Underwood’s Commitment

Michigan is looking to resolve its quarterback challenges with a promising addition: five-star QB Bryce Underwood, who is regarded as the No. 2 player in the high school class of 2025. Underwood, a Michigan native, made his verbal commitment to the Wolverines on Thursday, previously having been committed to LSU.

If Underwood follows through and signs with Michigan during either the early signing period in December or the regular signing period in 2025, he will become the highest-ranked recruit for the Wolverines since Rashan Gary, who committed in 2016. Additionally, he would be the first Rivals five-star recruit to join the Michigan roster since star defensive back Will Johnson in 2022. Johnson has emerged as one of college football’s top defensive talents and is projected to be a first-round pick in the upcoming 2025 NFL Draft.

Underwood’s commitment coincides with a significant development in the recruitment scene, as five-star QB Julian Lewis also announced his commitment to Colorado. Lewis had recently de-committed from USC and is currently ranked No. 6 in the country.

On a notable side note, Underwood attends Belleville High School, which is connected to former Michigan staffer Connor Stalions. Despite the controversy surrounding Stalions and an alleged advance scouting scheme, the focus remains on the implications of Underwood’s decision for Michigan’s football program.

The Wolverines have struggled this season, holding a current record of 5-5 with two games remaining. The team’s quarterback situation has been a significant factor in their performance, with three players starting and producing less than 60% completion, along with nine touchdowns and nine interceptions collectively across the season. With an average of six yards per passing attempt, the need for a talented quarterback like Underwood has never been more crucial.

Head coach Sherrone Moore expressed his enthusiasm over Underwood’s commitment on social media, emphasizing the importance of keeping top talent in-state. As of now, Michigan’s 2024 recruiting class ranks No. 11 nationally according to Rivals, enhanced by Underwood’s commitment.

Looking ahead, if Underwood signs in December, he will have the opportunity to enroll early at Michigan and participate in the spring practices. This could pave the way for a reinvigorated Wolverines offense, potentially transforming the team’s fortunes in the coming years. The future looks bright for Michigan football as it aims to secure homegrown talent and turn around its performance on the field.
