Michigan State Football is set to begin its season on Friday night, welcoming Florida Atlantic to Spartan Stadium. Players and coaches have highlighted the team’s culture as a key focus during the offseason.
In a recent video, both players and Head Coach Jonathan Smith shared their insights about the team’s atmosphere as they approach the season opener.
After 280 days of anticipation, Michigan State football embarks on the Jonathan Smith era tonight against Florida Atlantic. Throughout spring practice and fall camp, establishing a strong culture has been a priority for the new coaching staff.
“They really bring us together,” said sixth-year defensive tackle and team captain Maverick Hansen, who is now experiencing his third coaching staff in East Lansing. Under Coach Smith’s leadership, a new chapter in Spartan football is set to unfold, both on and off the field.
Hansen added, “They make like little games and stuff for us to make sure that we know everyone’s name, their hometowns, and their interests. It’s the little things that accumulate and truly help build camaraderie among the players.”
Other teammates have expressed a growing sense of toughness and grit in the locker room, believing it will contribute to their success throughout the season.
“I think on paper we’re not the flashiest team,” said offensive lineman Tanner Miller. “But I think when things get tough, we’re going to grit it out. We have the guys and the mental toughness to do that. We’re going to be a tough team.”
Coach Smith has emphasized the importance of resilience to the team, stating that Friday’s game will offer insights into their development.
“I’m curious to find out the response from this team,” Smith noted. “I talk about, you know, it’s 14-0, whether you’re up or down. It’s about our response in those moments. I want to be a team that finishes games and plays well into the fourth quarter. So Friday will be our first opportunity in live game action to see that.”
This marks an inaugural chance and a new chapter for Michigan State football.
