Michigan setback as 4-star edge Julian Walker picks South Carolina

Michigan football has faced a setback with the departure of four-star edge Julian Walker, a highly regarded recruit in the Class of 2026. Walker, who hails from Irmo, South Carolina, and attends Dutch Fork High School, has opted to remain close to home and sign with South Carolina instead of joining the Wolverines in Ann Arbor.

Walker initially committed to Michigan on July 1, shortly after visiting the campus for an official tour. However, he kept the door open on his recruitment, visiting South Carolina unofficially in early September and following up with an official visit in mid-October that ultimately influenced his decision.

South Carolina has been capitalizing on recruiting opportunities, especially given the downturn of programs like Clemson and the challenges faced by North Carolina under coach Bill Belichick, focusing heavily on talent from the Carolinas. Notably, six of the Gamecocks’ top seven commitments for this cycle are sourced from either North or South Carolina, helping elevate their recruiting class into the top 20 nationally.

Walker ranks as the No. 3 player in South Carolina and is recognized as the No. 10 edge rusher in the country, along with being a top-100 overall player according to 247sports composite rankings. His commitment was seen as a significant win for Michigan’s defensive line coach Lou Esposito, so his decision to remain with the Gamecocks marks a notable loss for the Wolverines. Before his flip, Michigan’s recruiting class was ranked 11th overall, and this change may cause a shift in their standings.

As Michigan moves forward, it will likely seek to fill the void left by Walker, either through securing another high school recruit or by exploring options in the transfer portal. With the early signing period approaching, the Wolverines will be eager to reinforce their roster.
