Michigan is bracing for an Extreme Heat Watch this weekend, with temperatures forecasted to soar into the 90s. As summer approaches, the National Weather Service (NWS) warns that heat indexes could reach triple digits over the coming days, creating hazardous conditions for residents.

The Extreme Heat Watch will commence Saturday morning and extend through Tuesday evening, affecting most of eastern Michigan, including all of Southeast Michigan and parts of the Lower Peninsula such as Midland, Bay, Huron, Kent, Ingham, and Kalamazoo counties. This prolonged period of extreme heat significantly raises the risk of heat-related illnesses as Southeast Michigan’s heat index is projected to exceed 100 degrees.

In addition to the heat, there is a potential for thunderstorms this Friday evening, particularly from 2 to 8 p.m. While the storms are expected to be less severe than recent weeks’ downpours, localized gusts of wind up to 50 mph and hail are still possible.

Looking ahead, the hourly forecast indicates that Friday’s temperatures will peak in the 80s, cooling to about 68 degrees overnight. Saturday is expected to heat up to around 92 degrees with a heat index of 101. Temperatures will rise even further on Sunday, hitting 95 degrees, and Monday is forecasted to be the hottest day, reaching 97 degrees with a heat index surpassing 100.

As the heat intensifies, it is critical for residents to take precautions. Staying hydrated and avoiding outdoor activities during peak heat hours are essential. Those without air conditioning should seek out cool environments during the day, and pets and children should never be left unattended in vehicles.

This extreme weather serves as a reminder to prioritize health and safety during the sweltering days ahead. Although challenging, residents can take comfort in the community’s resilience and solidarity in dealing with the heat.
