Michigan football has bolstered its roster by adding former Oklahoma running back Taylor Tatum through the transfer portal. Tatum, who was highly regarded as the top-ranked running back in the 2024 recruiting class, joins a competitive running back unit at Michigan that already features Jordan Marshall and Savion Hiter, the top recruit for 2026.
This transfer comes shortly after Michigan experienced a loss of its own, with linebacker Cole Sullivan transferring to Oklahoma. Remarkably, the Wolverines already possess considerable depth at the running back position, even as Bryson Kuzdzal and Jasper Parker opted to enter the transfer portal. With Marshall returning and Hiter already on campus, Michigan’s offensive backfield appears well-equipped for the upcoming season. The presence of Jonathan Brown, a three-star recruit who is still developing, adds further options.
During his time at Oklahoma, Tatum faced challenges, including a hamstring injury in 2025 that limited him to just one game, where he had one carry for -1 yard. In his freshman year, he made a notable impact with 56 carries for 278 yards and three touchdowns across 11 games. With three years of eligibility left, Tatum has the opportunity to make a significant contribution to Michigan’s offense.
Interestingly, the Wolverines had pursued Tatum during his initial recruitment before he ultimately chose Oklahoma. His arrival now creates an intriguing dynamic between the two programs, especially as they prepare to meet in a much-anticipated matchup at The Big House in Week 2 of the upcoming season.
As Michigan continues to enhance its roster, the addition of a player of Tatum’s caliber demonstrates the program’s commitment to maintaining a competitive edge, positioning them favorably as they look ahead to the challenges of the season.
