Former NFL sideline reporter Michele Tafoya officially kicked off her campaign for the U.S. Senate on Wednesday, aiming to secure the Republican nomination for the Minnesota seat that will be left vacant by retiring Democratic Senator Tina Smith. In a video shared on social media, Tafoya emphasizes her experience in high-pressure environments as a sports reporter, asserting that it has equipped her with valuable insights into leadership.
Tafoya, who stood on a snowy football field in her announcement video, stated, “For years, I covered the biggest football games in America… When leaders are prepared and accountable, teams succeed.” She highlighted her commitment to addressing ongoing immigration issues in Minnesota, expressing her support for federal law enforcement. “As Minnesota’s senator, I will clean up the system, fighting corruption, ending the fraud and protecting your tax dollars,” she declared, stressing her stance on law enforcement and female sports.
The video critiques Democratic Governor Tim Walz regarding fraud cases linked to his administration and includes mentions of U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar, reflecting her alignment with more conservative appeals. Tafoya has been a notable figure in Minnesota Republican politics for years, recognized primarily for her role as a sideline reporter for NBC’s Sunday Night Football from 2011 to 2022, and is currently hosting a politically-themed podcast.
Her entry into the race has garnered support from prominent Republicans, including U.S. Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina, who endorsed her with a social media post declaring, “Change is coming, and Michele Tafoya will lead the way.” Nevertheless, she may encounter challenges among certain Republican factions due to her past endorsements of Marco Rubio in 2016 and her appeals against Donald Trump’s candidacy in 2022, coupled with her support for some abortion rights.
On the Democratic side, U.S. Representative Angie Craig and Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan are vying for their party’s nomination to take over Smith’s position. Craig, pointing out Tafoya’s affiliation with Trump’s support, remarked that Minnesota deserves a senator committed to fighting for the state rather than a representative of “MAGA” politics.
