Michael Vick’s New Playbook: Coaching at Norfolk State!

Michael Vick is set to take the reins as head coach of Norfolk State University, marking his return to the game after a notable career as an NFL quarterback. In a heartfelt announcement on Facebook Tuesday night, the 44-year-old Vick expressed excitement about returning to his roots in Virginia, where he grew up in nearby Newport News.

Vick’s football journey began at Virginia Tech, where he earned recognition before playing 13 seasons in the NFL, where he was a four-time Pro Bowler. He was known for revolutionizing the quarterback position with his dual-threat capabilities, excelling as both a passer and a runner.

However, Vick’s path was not without obstacles. He faced significant challenges during his career, including an 18-month prison sentence related to his involvement in a dogfighting operation. After his release, he made a triumphant return to the NFL, winning the AP Comeback Player of the Year award while playing for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2010. Vick retired in 2017 and has since dedicated himself to advocating against animal cruelty and serving as an NFL analyst for Fox Sports.

His appointment as Norfolk State’s head coach follows the departure of Dawson Odums, who was released after a disappointing 4-8 season. The Spartans, a historically Black university in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, have previously appeared in the FCS playoffs, notably losing to Old Dominion in 2011.

Vick had also been in discussions with Sacramento State regarding its open coaching position before deciding on Norfolk State.

This new chapter in Vick’s life not only showcases his return to the football field in a different capacity but also reflects his potential to inspire and lead young athletes. With his personal experience and professional insight, Vick could bring valuable lessons and mentorship to the Spartans, emphasizing resilience and growth.

Overall, this is a positive development that indicates Vick’s commitment to giving back to his community and shaping the future of aspiring football players.
