Michael Bolton’s daughters are courageously sharing their experiences as caregivers for their father, two years after he was diagnosed with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer. The Grammy winner’s daughters, Isa and Taryn, along with their sister Holly, spoke with AARP.org about their father’s condition, which Bolton first revealed to the public in a PEOPLE cover story last April.
“We’re proud and happy to update anyone who has been interested in following [our Dad’s] journey that he is in very good spirits and very good health,” Isa expressed. She acknowledged that while there are challenges, Bolton remains strong, with excellent mobility and cognitive function.
Taryn shared an uplifting perspective on the atmosphere in their Connecticut home, noting that Bolton is generally in good spirits and eager to embrace each day. Following his diagnosis in December 2023, Bolton underwent emergency surgery to remove a brain tumor and completed radiation and chemotherapy treatments by October 2024. He continues to have MRIs every two months to monitor his condition, as glioblastoma has a high recurrence rate.
Discussing their roles as caregivers, Isa and Taryn explained how their father’s health crisis has led them to adapt in different ways. Isa mentioned how they each honor Bolton through various means—whether ensuring daily care is met or providing emotional support. However, she also touched on the realities of caregiver fatigue, describing it as a roller coaster experience that can be overwhelming.
Taryn emphasized the importance of self-care for caregivers, stating, “It’s important to be good in yourself so that you can give the best care to your loved ones.” This sentiment aligns with comments from AARP CEO Myechia Minter-Jordan, who highlighted the critical support provided by family caregivers across the nation and emphasized the need for adequate support from policymakers.
Despite the hurdles they face, the sisters are cherishing the valuable time spent with their father, who has stepped back from his busy work schedule to be more present at home. Isa reflected on this newfound time together, noting, “We probably had more meals with him in two years than we have our entire 50 years.”
Bolton expressed deep gratitude for his daughters’ unwavering support, stating, “This past year has tested me in ways I never imagined… My daughters have been constant in a way that grounds me.”
In his conversations with fans and the media, Bolton has chosen to focus on hope and resilience. He shared in his emotional PEOPLE interview that remaining hopeful and connected with loved ones makes a significant difference during difficult times. As he continues to battle his illness, he remains determined, sharing his aspirations for new music and family moments.
In a recent Thanksgiving post, he conveyed his gratitude for the love and joy his family brings, emphasizing the simple yet profound moments that make life beautiful. The close-knit support of Bolton’s family showcases a powerful testament to love and perseverance amid adversity.
