MIAMI — Excitement is building as loanDepot park transforms into a hockey venue for the 2026 Discover NHL Winter Classic, set for January 2. The preparations for this historic event, which will feature the Florida Panthers facing off against the New York Rangers, are well underway. This game marks a significant milestone as it will be the first-ever outdoor ice hockey match in the state of Florida.
On Tuesday afternoon, the NHL began laying down the ice at the home of the Miami Marlins, with other essential elements, such as dasher boards, glass, benches, and penalty boxes, already in place. NHL executive vice president of events, Dean Matsuzaki, humorously noted that while heated benches are installed for player comfort, they likely won’t be necessary given Miami’s climate.
“It’s starting to feel very intimate in this building,” Matsuzaki commented, as he observed the rink taking shape on the baseball diamond. The unique layout of the park, with its narrower field, creates a more engaging atmosphere for spectators. For this Winter Classic, the ballpark will accommodate approximately 35,300 fans.
The event will feature a delightful blend of winter and Floridian themes. One half of the field will portray a winter wonderland, complete with a synthetic ice rink, while the other half will boast a vibrant beach scene highlighted by a street hockey rink.
To combat Miami’s heat, the NHL has taken extensive measures to ensure the ice remains intact. This includes the installation of 253 aluminum pans under the ice, connected to two Mobile Refrigeration Units designed to maintain cool temperatures. With the stadium’s retractable roof closed in recent days, air conditioning is also playing a crucial role in controlling the climate inside.
As January 2 approaches, local weather forecasts indicate a pleasant day with a high of around 70 degrees and no rain expected, alleviating concerns about warmth during the game. “We welcome that,” Matsuzaki added, expressing hope for a slight temperature drop as they plan to open the roof for a tropical game-day experience.
