A second player from the Miami Dolphins has been detained following an incident involving star wide receiver Tyreek Hill, who was pulled over and handcuffed by police, according to officials on Monday. The situation has been described as “troubling” by the mayor and has resulted in at least one officer being reassigned.
Footage captured by fans outside Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens shows police surrounding Hill before he was placed face-down and detained ahead of the Dolphins’ season-opening game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. This video has circulated widely on social media.
Teammate Calais Campbell, a defensive lineman, also spoke to reporters after witnessing the situation and attempted to intervene before he too was detained. A police department representative confirmed Campbell’s involvement. However, further details, such as the names of the officers involved, were not disclosed due to an ongoing investigation.
Miami-Dade Police Department Director Stephanie Daniels announced on Sunday that an internal affairs investigation was launched, and she confirmed that one officer involved has been reassigned while the inquiry takes place. Mayor Daniella Levine Cava commended the police leadership for their swift response to the incident, emphasizing the importance of reviewing police use of force in light of recent national discussions.
Hill has been cited for reckless driving and driving without a valid license, according to his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, who argued that such offenses should not have led to Hill’s detention. He suggested that Hill felt he was treated unfairly during the encounter.
A representative from the police union stated that Hill was “not immediately cooperative” and refused to comply with directions initially, which led to him being subdued. After the situation was resolved, Hill received traffic citations and was allowed to leave.
The agency has not commented on the union’s account of events, citing restrictions on communications due to the ongoing investigation. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis expressed confidence in the ability of investigators to determine whether the police acted appropriately during the incident.
