Mia Carragher has been cast as Katniss Everdeen in the highly anticipated play “The Hunger Games: On Stage,” which is set to debut in London. The announcement was made on the show’s official Instagram account, showcasing Carragher’s headshot and an introductory video of her rehearsing with a crossbow.
Expressing her excitement, Carragher stated, “I’m really excited to play Katniss. I relate to her quite a lot. I think she’s very fearless, but then she’s also got that nurturing quality about her. Everyone needs to come and watch ‘The Hunger Games: On Stage’ because it’s going to be nothing like you’ve ever seen.”
Carragher, the daughter of former Liverpool player and football analyst Jamie Carragher, is a graduate of Tring Park School for the Performing Arts and has also studied at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute. Her previous credits include the film “One Night in Istanbul” and the Channel 4 production “The Gathering.” She will soon appear in the comedy “Let’s Love” alongside Josh Hutcherson, Martin Freeman, and Malin Akerman.
This rendition marks the first live stage adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ acclaimed series and will commence performances on October 20 at the Troubadour Canary Wharf Theatre, a new venue accommodating 1,200 seats. Award-winning playwright Conor McPherson has adapted the original book, while director Matthew Dunster, known for “2:22 — A Ghost Story,” takes the helm.
Dunster expressed the challenge of finding the perfect actress for Katniss, stating, “It is not easy to step into Suzanne Collins’ amazing creation… We’ve found our Katniss in Mia Carragher, and we can’t wait for audiences to see her.”
