The New York Mets have made several roster moves, including placing outfielder Starling Marte on the 10-day injured list with a bruised right knee while activating Jesse Winker, who has returned after a two-month hiatus due to an oblique injury. Manager Carlos Mendoza commented on the dual nature of roster changes, saying, “It’s funny how things work. You gain one, you lose one.”
Marte, who has been a key player in the Mets lineup, recently had a strong performance with seven hits in three games, including three hits while starting in left field against the Yankees. He is currently batting .270 with four home runs and 20 RBIs over 58 games. The Mets are optimistic that Marte will return post-All-Star break. Mendoza noted that this issue has been recurring for Marte since spring training and part of last season, but he believes Marte is managing it well.
On the other hand, Winker, having last played on May 4, brings additional depth to the Mets’ outfield and designated hitter roles. He has a batting average of .239 with one home run and 10 RBIs across 24 games. Mendoza expressed his excitement about having Winker back, emphasizing his consistent performance and left-handed power.
Additionally, the Mets have selected the contract of right-handed pitcher Alejandro Carrillo from Triple-A Syracuse and designated pitcher Zach Pop for assignment. Carrillo, who was previously in Independent ball, has an impressive fastball, reaching speeds up to 100 mph. Mendoza shared that Carrillo’s journey from the Venezuelan Winter League to the majors is an inspiring story, and the team is eager to give him an opportunity in the big leagues.
These changes reflect the Mets’ ongoing adjustments as they navigate the season, highlighting both the challenges of injuries and the excitement of welcoming back key players. With Marte’s potential recovery and Winker’s activation, the team appears ready to bolster its offensive capabilities moving forward.
