Mets’ Pitching Plans in Flux as Manaea’s Setback Raises Questions

The New York Mets are facing more challenges as left-hander Sean Manaea has suffered a setback in his rehabilitation from a right-oblique injury. Manager Carlos Mendoza revealed on Tuesday that Manaea is experiencing discomfort due to a loose body in his left elbow, halting his throwing for 48 to 72 hours. However, it’s worth noting that he received a cortisone shot on Monday to reduce swelling, and no additional procedures are expected.

Mendoza reassured fans by stating, “They’re telling me that he should be fine for the rest of the year.” Mets president of baseball operations, David Stearns, echoed this sentiment, expressing confidence that Manaea might return to pitching next week and potentially be activated shortly thereafter.

Manaea last pitched for Triple-A Syracuse on Friday, completing 5 1/3 innings, yet reported feeling “a little sore” afterward. He initially thought it was typical soreness, but the discomfort persisted the following day.

This announcement coincides with the anticipated debut of right-hander Frankie Montas, who has been on the injured list since spring training due to a lat injury.

Currently, the Mets are struggling, having lost nine of their last ten games as they prepare for a matchup against the Atlanta Braves.

Despite the team’s recent difficulties, the potential return of Manaea and the debut of Montas offer a glimmer of hope as they navigate this challenging phase of the season.
