Mets’ Offseason Dilemma: Will They Keep Pete Alonso?

The baseball community is still buzzing over Juan Soto’s historic contract with the New York Mets, but the focus for president of baseball operations David Stearns is now shifting towards another prominent free agent: first baseman Pete Alonso. Stearns expressed his enthusiasm for keeping Alonso with the team, stating, “We’d love to bring Pete back. He’s been a great Met.” Alonso, known for his impactful performances, particularly his pivotal home run in the National League Wild Card Series, has solidified his status as a fan favorite since being drafted as a second-round pick in 2016.

Despite Alonso’s impressive accomplishments, including being a four-time All-Star and hitting 216 home runs since his debut in 2019—the second-most in that time frame—his defensive capabilities and offensive output have declined over the past three years. Stearns acknowledged the challenges ahead by mentioning his experience with Alonso’s agent, Scott Boras, as they navigate the negotiation process.

The Mets have encountered some roster changes this offseason, losing right-hander Luis Severino to the A’s while acquiring outfielder Jose Siri and securing right-handers Frankie Montas and Clay Holmes for their starting rotation. While Stearns mentioned the potential for further additions to the pitching lineup, he doesn’t view it as an immediate requirement.

As the Mets look to bolster their roster, the possibility of moving Mark Vientos, a breakout star in 2024, from third base to first base has been considered if Alonso does not return; however, Stearns sees Vientos primarily as a third baseman.

In addition to the pitchers acquired, the Mets are eyeing both veteran free agents and the newly posted Japanese star Roki Sasaki, who will be available to sign as a free agent soon.

This offseason presents both challenges and opportunities for the Mets as they manage their roster and work to retain key talents while also considering fresh faces to enhance their team dynamics.

In summary, while the Mets face decisions regarding Alonso’s future, they have shown a commitment to improving their team and are open to exploring various opportunities to build a competitive roster for the upcoming season. As discussions unfold, fans remain hopeful for the continuation of Alonso’s impactful presence in New York.
