Mets Make Major Move With Undrafted Pitcher’s MLB Debut

The New York Mets are set to bring right-handed pitcher Jonathan Pintaro up to their MLB roster, according to reports from Will Sammon of The Athletic. This decision will necessitate adjustments to both their active and 40-man rosters.

Pintaro, who is 27 years old, has been performing well at Double-A Binghamton this season. Although he has started all 11 of his games, his workload has been untraditional, typically averaging around four innings per outing. His performance statistics are impressive, featuring a strikeout rate of one-third of his opponents while maintaining an 8.8% walk rate. After a recent promotion to Triple-A on Tuesday, the Mets have instead opted to integrate him into the big league bullpen, likely in a low-leverage long relief role.

The right-hander is a product of Division II Shorter University in Georgia, where he went undrafted in 2022. His promotion to MLB will mark a historic moment, as he will be the second player from his university to reach the majors, following 1980s reliever Bob Long. Pintaro began his professional journey in the Pioneer League and signed with the Mets on a minor league contract last June.

Throughout the early stages of his career, Pintaro has delivered a combined 2.68 ERA in 74 innings across three levels, averaging over a strikeout per inning. Baseball America recognized him as the #25 prospect in the Mets’ system during the offseason and described him as a potential depth starter or swingman who effectively utilizes a five-pitch mix to alter hitters’ timing.

Pintaro’s ascent to the major leagues is a testament to his dedication and skill, as he has steadily climbed the ranks from undrafted player to a recognized prospect within the Mets organization. His success serves as an inspiring narrative for aspiring athletes, showcasing that hard work and perseverance can lead to achievement at the highest levels of the sport.
