Mets Install Jeff Albert as Lead Hitting Instructor in Coaching Shakeup

In a significant move aimed at revitalizing their offense, the New York Mets have appointed Jeff Albert as their lead hitting instructor, according to league sources. This decision comes on the heels of a disappointing season and marks the first significant action of a revamped coaching staff.

Previously serving as the Mets’ director of hitting in player development, Albert has been instrumental in the recent improvement of the team’s farm system. His expertise was honed during his tenure as the hitting coach for the St. Louis Cardinals, making him a seasoned addition to the Mets’ coaching ranks. Albert’s appointment has been reported by ESPN.

Albert’s experience will be pivotal as the Mets look to enhance their offense for the upcoming season. Last season, the Mets’ lineup showcased strong statistical performances across several metrics but often struggled with consistency. His promotion comes at a time when the team hopes to rectify these inconsistencies, particularly after the departure of former co-hitting coaches Jeremy Barnes and Eric Chavez.

Additionally, the Mets have indicated plans to potentially hire another hitting coach who would report to Albert. After the season ended, the organization extended an invitation to coaching assistant Rafael Fernandez, recognizing his contributions to working with hitters.

With a mix of established stars like Juan Soto, Francisco Lindor, and Brandon Nimmo under long-term contracts, Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns has expressed a desire to balance the roster with emerging talent. Young players, including Brett Baty, Mark Vientos, Luisangel Acuña, Ronny Mauricio, and promising catcher Francisco Alvarez, will look to Albert for mentorship and development.

Mets senior vice president for player development Andy Green lauded Albert, stating he is “as bright as anybody in the game when it comes to hitting.” His track record at the Mets has been noteworthy, with players such as A.J. Ewing and Jacob Reimer showcasing significant offensive improvements under his guidance.

While the Mets focus on enhancing their hitting department, several coaching vacancies remain, including positions for a pitching coach, bench coach, third base coach, and catching coach. The team is poised to make further changes as they seek to build a competitive roster for the next season.
