The New York Mets have made the significant decision to designate veteran outfielder Jose Siri for assignment, parting ways with a player known for his defensive prowess during a critical playoff push. This move was first reported by Will Sammon of The Athletic.
Jose Siri, who joined the Mets in a trade from the Tampa Bay Rays last November, has had a challenging stint with the team. Despite appearing in 16 games this season, he struggled offensively, batting only .063. Over his career, Siri has been celebrated for his defensive skills but has not found consistent success at the plate. With a career batting average of .206, Siri has managed to hit 54 home runs and drive in 137 RBIs across 372 games played with teams including the Houston Astros and Tampa Bay Rays.
His time with the Mets was further complicated by a fractured left tibia sustained in April, which delayed his return to play until August. In limited action with the Mets’ Triple-A affiliate in Syracuse, Siri only managed a .200 batting average, and his subsequent games with the Mets didn’t yield much improvement.
In a corresponding roster move, the Mets have activated outfielder Tyrone Taylor from the injured list. Taylor presents a similar defensive profile to Siri and carries a batting line of .218/.277/.315 over 109 games this season. His return comes after a stint on the injured list due to a strained hamstring.
As the regular season approaches its end, Siri’s future remains uncertain. With the minor league season concluded, if another team were to claim him, he would not be eligible for their postseason roster. Looking ahead, Siri is eligible for salary arbitration after this season and may be seeking a fresh start in 2026 to rejuvenate his career.
Currently, the Mets stand with a record of 81-76 and maintain a narrow lead for the National League’s final Wild Card spot as they prepare for a crucial game against the Chicago Cubs. The outcome of these final games will be pivotal for their playoff ambitions.
