Metro Detroit is bracing for what is expected to be the coldest temperatures of the winter this weekend. According to the National Weather Service, nearly every day this week, excluding Wednesday, is anticipated to see temperatures falling below the seasonal average. Meteorologist Alex Manion indicated that the peak of this cold spell will occur over the weekend.

On Friday, January 23, the temperature in Detroit is predicted to drop to 0 degrees in the morning, accompanied by a wind chill of approximately minus-10. The afternoon high is expected to only reach 8 degrees. As for Saturday, January 24, the morning low forecasts a chilling minus-8 degrees, with wind chill values plunging to a stark minus-15 to minus-20, as highlighted by Manion.

The early hours of Sunday will bring a low around minus-2 degrees, maintaining a wind chill of around minus-10. Yet, there is a slight reprieve in the afternoon, with temperatures forecasted to rise to 14 degrees.

Manion noted that the typical January 20 weather would have a high around 32 degrees and a low about 19 degrees, indicating a significant deviation from normal conditions. While there are no expectations for high winds this week, the biting cold can increase the risk of frostbite.

Frostbite is a serious concern when temperatures plummet below zero, especially if winds exceed 15 mph or if the temperature sinks to minus-10 with calm winds. The National Weather Service notes that it can take as little as 30 minutes for frostbite to develop in exposed skin under such conditions.

Residents are advised to dress in layers when venturing outdoors and to check in on friends and family during this extreme weather. For those in need of warmth, Metro Detroit has several warming centers available, ensuring that community members can seek shelter from the cold. A comprehensive list of these locations, including hours of operation and emergency shelter information for those facing homelessness, can be found online.

As the winter deepens, it is crucial for everyone to stay informed and take necessary precautions against the harsh temperatures.
