During the recent Meta Connect annual event held at the company’s headquarters in Menlo Park, California, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that Shengjia Zhao, a prominent co-creator of OpenAI’s ChatGPT, will take on the role of chief scientist at Meta Superintelligence Labs. This reinforces Meta’s commitment to leading advancements in artificial intelligence.

Zuckerberg has been actively expanding his AI team, evident from a recent multibillion-dollar investment strategy that includes a significant $14 billion allocation to Scale AI. The establishment of Meta Superintelligence Labs, which was introduced in June, comprises a team of elite AI researchers and engineers focused on pioneering developments in the field.

Although Zhao was mentioned in a June memo detailing new hires, Zuckerberg clarified that Zhao has been instrumental in the lab’s inception and has served as the lead scientist since its creation. He will collaborate closely with Zuckerberg and Alexandr Wang, the former CEO of Scale AI, now serving as Meta’s chief AI officer.

Zuckerberg expressed enthusiasm about Zhao’s contributions, highlighting his achievements in pioneering breakthroughs and developing a new scaling paradigm within AI research. This announcement signifies a promising direction for Meta as it continues to push the boundaries of artificial intelligence.

Zuckerberg’s investment and strategic hiring not only demonstrate a strong commitment to advancing AI technology but also reflect a broader trend in the tech industry towards integrating sophisticated AI systems. The collaboration between seasoned experts and innovative leaders like Zhao is expected to yield significant advancements in the field, potentially benefiting a wide array of applications across various sectors.
