A post from a 66-year-old man from Iowa, seeking companionship with younger women, drew attention when it was responded to by the AI chatbot, which suggested locations like Spain or Italy for potential romance. While such lighthearted interactions could be common, they often mask a darker reality related to data privacy.
The Meta AI feature, which was launched in April, allows users to view others’ interactions with the chatbot through a public “discover” tab. This feature has drawn scrutiny as many users unknowingly share personal and sensitive information. Calli Schroeder, a senior counsel for the Electronic Privacy Information Center, raised alarms over this trend, noting that users have revealed medical details, addresses, and even information related to legal matters in their conversations with the chatbot.
The concern lies in the lack of awareness among users regarding the public nature of their exchanges. Although sharing chats is not automatic, users must actively choose to make them public, a process many might not fully comprehend. This hindered awareness could lead to unintentional exposure of private information.
Among the many documented conversations, some users sought assistance for serious matters, including legal notices and medical inquiries, while associating their accounts with identifiable social media profiles. Meta representative Daniel Roberts asserted that user privacy is prioritized and that chats remain protected unless users consciously opt to share them publicly. However, questions regarding the actual safeguards in place to protect sensitive data have yet to be satisfactorily addressed, leaving room for public concern.
