Metaphor: ReFantazio Review

Metaphor: ReFantazio is an expansive RPG that draws heavily on elements from the Persona series, boasting a rich exploration aspect and a charming cast of characters. However, its intense focus on combat may result in it being less memorable than its high school-themed predecessors. The game, developed by Atlus and published by Sega, is set to be released on October 11, 2024, for Windows at a price of £60/€70/$70.

At the start of the game, players assume the role of an anime character known as an Elda, a less regarded race in a world filled with diverse beings such as cat-eared individuals and those with wings. Facing prejudice and challenges, the protagonist embarks on a quest involving a cursed prince, a power struggle, and the aim of saving the throne from an ambitious brother.

Metaphor’s narrative imparts clear themes about societal issues, particularly racism and the importance of kindness and democracy. While some might find the messaging too overt, the story is peppered with twists that maintain engagement.

The gameplay structure resembles the Persona series, wherein players must manage their time between various activities leading up to key deadlines, such as completing a pivotal dungeon. The game flows more naturally than its predecessor, featuring a Gauntlet Runner, a lively ship that serves as a mobile base for adventures across various cities. Each town presents quests and other interactions that enhance the sense of exploration and dynamic storytelling.

Combat is redefined with the introduction of real-time elements, though the turn-based system still plays a significant role. The Archetype system allows players to unlock various classes through relationships developed with companions, providing a customizable battle experience. Dungeons feature improvements in design, offering varied challenges and avoiding some of the monotonous structures of earlier titles.

Despite its engaging mechanics, critics note that Metaphor can become repetitive and may require players to cycle through a limited range of Archetypes. Additionally, while the character interactions are compelling, they do not capture the same vibrant essence found in Persona, leading to a feeling of disconnection.

In summary, Metaphor: ReFantazio is a meticulously crafted RPG with a strong emphasis on combat and exploration. Although it may not deliver the same level of emotional connection as its predecessors, it offers an exhilarating adventure that is undeniably worth exploring. The game shines with its polished presentation and robust gameplay, establishing itself as a noteworthy entry in the genre.
