Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta Platforms, addressed the recent service disruptions affecting Meta’s suite of apps, including Facebook and Instagram, during the Meta Connect event in Menlo Park, California on September 25, 2024.

On Wednesday, users encountered difficulties accessing Meta’s core applications, which also included Threads, WhatsApp, and Messenger. Reports of these widespread outages began surfacing around 9:57 a.m. PST, as documented by the internet-monitoring site Downdetector. At the peak of the problems, over 100,000 users faced issues with Facebook at approximately 10:11 a.m. PST.

In response to the situation, Meta took to social media platform X to inform users that they were aware of the technical difficulties. The company expressed regret for the inconvenience and emphasized their commitment to restoring normal operations as quickly as possible. A similar message was shared specifically for Instagram users, indicating that they were also experiencing access issues.

By the afternoon, Meta provided an update indicating progress in resolving the outages, noting they were “99% of the way there” and performing final checks. Shortly thereafter, Instagram confirmed its service was back online, thanking users for their patience during the disruption.

Interestingly, this event comes on the heels of a previous outage in March 2024, which lasted about two hours and coincided with the Super Tuesday U.S. presidential primaries.

This recent incident underscores the reliance on social media and digital communication platforms in our daily lives, and highlights the ongoing challenges that companies like Meta face in maintaining robust connectivity for their users. While outages can be frustrating, the swift communication from Meta demonstrates a commitment to transparency and customer support. Looking ahead, it presents an opportunity for Meta to strengthen its infrastructure and enhance service reliability, fostering greater user confidence in the long run.
