This year’s Met Gala highlighted the competitive spirit between established fashion houses and emerging designers, particularly those from the Black community, under the theme of “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.” The event saw notable participation from newer talents like Sergio Hudson and Grace Wales Bonner, showcasing their unique designs alongside high-profile brands.
An analysis by Glossy revealed that giant fashion brands, including Louis Vuitton and Thom Browne, dressed the most attendees, with each brand outfitting 12 guests. Louis Vuitton has recently revitalized its brand under the direction of music producer Pharrell Williams, who was appointed creative director in February 2023. Known for his ability to align fashion with cultural moments, Williams co-chaired the gala alongside celebrities including A$AP Rocky and Colman Domingo. In contrast to its absence in previous years, Louis Vuitton made a significant impact this year, showcasing bespoke styles at the Gala after a hiatus after the 2022 event.
Thom Browne, renowned for his custom suit-making background, also played a pivotal role, partnering with celebrated Black designer Paul Tazewell to interpret the event’s theme. Tazewell’s designs were prominently featured, particularly Janelle Monáe’s striking outfit, which quickly gained viral attention, accumulating over 5.8 million views on social media.
Among the newer designers, Sergio Hudson made a strong impression for the second consecutive year, dressing nine guests, including comedian Quinta Brunson and WNBA stars. Meanwhile, Grace Wales Bonner made her Met Gala debut, showcasing her custom creations for four celebrities, emphasizing her connection to the event as a host committee member.
Interestingly, a fifth of the designers at this year’s Met Gala were making their debut, contributing to a diverse showcase that included names like Adebayo Oke-Lawal and Hanifa. The trend signifies a promising shift in the fashion landscape, where new voices are gaining recognition and contributing to the rich tapestry of style celebrated at iconic events.
This year’s Met Gala reflects a hopeful movement in fashion as it embraces diversity and recognizes the talent of newer designers, marking an evolution that not only honors traditional luxury but also elevates emerging talents in the industry.
