Lionel Messi delivered an exceptional performance for Argentina, scoring a hat trick and assisting in two additional goals during a 6-0 victory over Bolivia in the South American qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup. The match took place on Tuesday at the Monumental de Nuñez Stadium, where enthusiastic fans witnessed the dominating display.
This match marked a significant milestone for Messi, as it was the first time in his international career that he recorded multiple goals and assists in a single match. The hat trick was also his 10th for Argentina, equaling Cristiano Ronaldo’s record for the most hat tricks with his national team.
Returning to international duty for only the second time after recovering from an injury sustained during the Copa América in July, Messi took advantage of a mistake made by Bolivian defender Marcelo Suarez to score the opening goal in the 19th minute.
“We enjoyed this, we are happy to be here playing in Argentina,” Messi expressed, while remaining tight-lipped on whether he would participate in the 2026 World Cup. “This could be one of the last [matches in front of the Argentinian crowd].”
Despite some impressive saves by Bolivian goalkeeper Guillermo Viscarra, he could not prevent Lautaro Martinez from scoring from Messi’s quick cross in the 43rd minute, bringing the score to 2-0. Argentina further extended their lead just before halftime, with Messi facilitating a goal for Julián Álvarez.
In the second half, Argentina continued to dominate. Substitute Thiago Almada scored the fourth goal in the 70th minute, courtesy of Nahuel Molina’s assist. Messi then added two more goals in the closing stages, rounding off a stunning showcase of skill and teamwork.
As a result of this victory, Copa América champions Argentina lead the standings with 22 points, holding a three-point advantage over Colombia, who defeated Chile earlier in the day. Bolivia, seeking to qualify for the World Cup for the first time in three decades, remains in contention with a total of 12 points.
The upcoming 2026 World Cup will be jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
