Messi Crowned MLS MVP: A Legendary Season Unveiled

Lionel Messi has been recognized as the Landon Donovan MVP for the 2024 MLS season, further solidifying his legendary status in professional soccer. The announcement was made on Friday, where Messi triumphed over notable players including Cucho Hernández from the Columbus Crew, Evander of the Portland Timbers, D.C. United’s Christian Benteke, and his Inter Miami teammate Luis Suárez.

At 37 years old, Messi made a significant impact in the league, scoring 20 goals in just 19 appearances. This remarkable achievement places him within an elite group of players, alongside Carlos Vela and Sebastian Giovinco, who have recorded at least 20 goals and 15 assists in a single season. The MVP honor is a reflection of a poll conducted among players, club technical staff, and select media members, with Messi capturing 38.43% of the votes, outpacing Benteke, who received 33.70%.

During his first full season with Inter Miami, having joined the club in July 2023, Messi faced challenges, including a 62-day absence due to an ankle injury suffered during Argentina’s win in the Copa América final. Despite this setback, Inter Miami flourished in his absence, winning eight out of nine matches. The league requires players to be on the field for at least 1,000 minutes to be eligible for MVP consideration, and Messi met this requirement, averaging more than one goal per 90 minutes played.

Messi’s impressive performance aligned with Inter Miami’s successful run, where they clinched the Supporters’ Shield and set a new single-season points record with 74. However, their journey ended prematurely, losing to Atlanta United in the first round of the playoffs.

MLS Commissioner Don Garber emphasized Messi’s global appeal, comparing his popularity to that of icons like Michael Jackson and Taylor Swift. The MVP trophy adds to Messi’s extensive array of accolades, including eight Ballon d’Or titles and multiple honors in both club and international competitions.

In a heartfelt moment, Messi received the MVP award from his three sons and spoke to young players at the Inter Miami Academy, encouraging them to strive for their dreams. As the MLS Cup final approaches, fans remain hopeful for the future of the league and its exciting prospects, thanks in part to the influence of such a star player.

This season serves not only as a testament to Messi’s extraordinary talent but also as a beacon of inspiration for aspiring soccer players everywhere.
