Mertens Makes History with Epic Comeback at Libema Open

In a dramatic semifinal at the Libema Open in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, Elise Mertens achieved a remarkable feat by saving 11 match points against two-time champion Ekaterina Alexandrova, setting a record for the most match points saved by a winner in a main-draw match on the Hologic WTA Tour in this decade.

The No. 3 seed Mertens rallied from a challenging position to secure a 2-6, 7-6(7), 6-4 victory over the second-seeded Alexandrova. Mertens reflected on her incredible performance, stating, “I didn’t even know it was 11, after one or two I lost count. I was very focused on the game… It was a difficult match, I think she started really well, and it was 6-2, 5-3 for her. I just stayed with my head in the game and gave everything I had. Especially in the third set, I felt like, ‘OK, this is maybe my opportunity.’ So I’m very happy I took that chance.”

This impressive comeback adds to Mertens’ reputation for resilience, as she has previously saved match points in critical matches, such as in 2025 at the Australian Open and during the 2023 US Open, showcasing her ability to perform under pressure.

Equally noteworthy is the context of her win; Alexandrova has been a formidable opponent, consistently reaching the quarterfinals or further in recent Libema Open editions, including winning titles in 2022 and 2023.

Mertens will next face qualifier Elena-Gabriela Ruse of Romania in the final. Ruse also exhibited her own tenacity by saving four match points to overcome Elisabetta Cocciaretto in the other semifinal. The final matchup promises excitement, particularly as Mertens has defeated Ruse in all three of their previous encounters, although their last meeting was in February 2023, making this clash on grass a fresh test for both players.

This remarkable performance not only highlights Mertens’ skill and determination but also sets the stage for an intriguing final, showcasing the thrilling nature of women’s tennis as it continues to captivate fans around the world.
