Mercury Adjust Roster Ahead of Sparks Showdown: Will New Talent Shine?

The Phoenix Mercury (1-0) are gearing up for their upcoming game against the Los Angeles Sparks (1-1) on May 21 at PHX Arena. The team has made notable changes to their lineup since their season opener on May 17, as they welcome back forward Murjanatu Musa and guard Kit Laksa, both of whom have returned from overseas commitments. In a move to facilitate Musa’s return, the Mercury decided to waive forward Alexis Prince, who led the team with eight rebounds in their opening game.

Head coach Nate Tibbetts expressed enthusiasm for Laksa’s abilities, referring to her as a “sniper” who plays efficiently without turnovers and possesses valuable size. Laksa’s experience in high-pressure games in Europe adds to the team’s depth, although Tibbetts noted that he does not want to rush her debut after she returned just days ago.

Musa’s condition for the game remains uncertain, as she has only recently arrived from France and is still adjusting to the time change. Tibbetts acknowledged the unique situation, humorously noting that she might not even know the current day or time.

Unfortunately, star player Kahleah Copper will miss this game due to a successful left knee arthroscopy and is expected to be sidelined for four to six weeks. Additionally, center Natasha Mack is also set to miss two to three weeks due to a lower back injury.

The game will be broadcasted locally on Arizona’s Family Sports at 7 p.m., providing fans with the opportunity to support the Mercury as they navigate these changes in their roster.

It’s an exciting time for the Mercury as they incorporate new talent while managing injuries. With the season still in its early stages, fans are hopeful that the returning players will quickly gel with the team and help maintain a strong start.
