Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff expressed deep disappointment with the team’s qualifying result at the Monaco Grand Prix, labeling it as “abysmal” after both George Russell and Kimi Antonelli failed to reach the top 10. This marked the first occasion in over three years that both Mercedes drivers missed Q3 in the same race, with Antonelli crashing during Q1 and Russell experiencing a technical failure that cut his session short in Q2.
As a result, Russell will start the race from 14th position, while Antonelli is in 15th, despite having set a fast enough time to advance before his crash. Wolff reflected on the session, noting the team had just started to find some pace but were hindered by mistakes and technical issues. He emphasized the need to investigate Russell’s engine failure to understand the exact cause.
Looking ahead to the race, a new rule requiring drivers to use three sets of tires, which necessitates at least two pit stops barring red flags, offers a glimmer of hope for the Silver Arrows. Wolff joked about possibly needing a reverse grid to gain positions but acknowledges that the new strategy could provide opportunities for those starting further back.
Russell expressed frustration with his situation, citing consecutive race problems following Antonelli’s throttle issue at the Emilia Romagna GP. He described feeling confident and strong during Q1 before the engine failure interrupted his session. Even with the new tire strategy at Monaco, he maintained a pessimistic view about the outcome from their starting positions.
On the other hand, Antonelli admitted responsibility for his crash, which caused damage to the car’s suspension. He recognized the mistake as costly and expressed regret for letting the team down, while emphasizing the need for a bold strategy to improve their race positions.
As they head into the Monaco Grand Prix, both drivers are aware of the challenges ahead but are also considering unconventional strategies that may allow them to salvage their race weekend. The new tire regulations could lead to an unpredictable race, providing a path for recovery amidst their current struggles.
