Cleco has provided an update regarding a significant power outage that affected over 100,000 residents across the North and South Shore areas. The outage, which occurred on a hot Memorial Day weekend, left many individuals without air conditioning and light for several hours. Local reporter Jasmine Franklin highlighted the severe impact of this event, particularly in a region where older homes often lack proper insulation.
The widespread outages were attributed to a “load shed,” a safety measure implemented by the transmission center responsible for managing the power grid. This action was deemed necessary to prevent a more extensive blackout that could threaten the grid’s reliability. Many residents expressed frustration, feeling that losing power during such a crucial time of year was unacceptable.
In response to the situation, local business ToUps Metairie stepped in to provide a cooling space for those affected by the outages, showcasing the community spirit of New Orleans. This support aimed to ensure that neighbors would not suffer unduly during the summer heat.
The outage also impacted local events, including the 50th celebration of Greek Fest, where the loss of electricity disrupted festivities and made it difficult to prepare food or maintain a comfortable environment for attendees. Fortunately, Entergy released a statement indicating that the required power outages have now ended, allowing power to be restored to affected areas.
Despite the challenges posed by this outage, the community’s willingness to support one another during difficult times is a testament to the resilience and solidarity that defines New Orleans.
