Mel Gibson is currently working on The Resurrection of the Christ, but before he unveils his long-awaited sequel to the 2004 biblical blockbuster, he will be starring in the action-thriller Hunting Season. Samuel Goldwyn Films has recently released a trailer for the film, igniting anticipation among fans.

The plot centers around a mysterious young woman who arrives unexpectedly on the shore of a local river, dramatically altering the lives of a feisty twelve-year-old girl and her overprotective father. As their lives entwine with this enigmatic stranger, they become embroiled in a dangerous conflict with a ruthless drug lord determined to eliminate her. Directed by Raja Collins and featuring a screenplay by Adam Hampton, the film also stars Shelley Hennig (Teen Wolf), Sofia Hublitz (Ozark), and Jordi Molla (Jack Ryan). Audiences can expect to see the film in theaters and on Digital/On Demand starting December 5.

A humorous moment in the trailer features Gibson’s character confronting an antagonist with a lawnmower, comically struggling to start the machine at first.

In addition to Hunting Season, Gibson is gearing up for the dual-release of The Resurrection of the Christ, with Part One scheduled for March 26, 2027 (Good Friday) and Part Two on May 6, 2027 (Ascension Day). Initially, Jim Caviezel was expected to reprise his role as Jesus, but production has since announced that Jaakko Ohtonen (Vikings: Valhalla) will take over the part, with Mariela Garriga (Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning) portraying Mary Magdalene. Gibson has hinted that the sequels will deliver a distinct experience, referring to the script as “an acid trip” and emphasizing that he has “never read anything like” it.

While the original film, The Passion of the Christ, faced significant controversy over its graphic violence upon release, it achieved remarkable success, grossing over $612 million worldwide. At one point, it held the record for the highest-grossing R-rated movie in the U.S. until it was surpassed by Deadpool and Wolverine.

The film industry awaits with excitement as Gibson continues to draw audiences with his diverse projects, blending action and spiritual storytelling in a captivating manner.
