Meghan Markle is set to return to the screen with a cameo role in the upcoming feature film “Close Personal Friends,” as confirmed by Variety. A notable ensemble cast that includes Lily Collins, Jack Quaid, Brie Larson, and Henry Golding is currently filming the comedy in Los Angeles.
The film’s narrative is centered around an ordinary couple who, during a trip to Santa Barbara, meet a celebrity couple. As the two pairs become friends, they inadvertently cross boundaries, leading to some awkward situations. The cast also features former “SNL” star Melissa Villaseñor, along with Natasia Demetriou, Anna Konkle, Patti Harrison, Jack Shalloo, and Dustin Demri-Burns.
Directed by Jason Orley, the film is based on a screenplay by Isaac Aptaker, who collaborated with Elizabeth Berger to produce the story. Aptaker and Orley previously worked together on Amazon MGM’s rom-com “I Want You Back,” suggesting a creative synergy among them.
Markle, well-known for her role in “Suits,” has taken a significant hiatus from acting, last appearing on screen seven years ago. Since marrying Prince Harry in 2018, she has shifted her focus towards producing content through their company, Archewell Productions. In August, Archewell re-extended its first-look deal with Netflix, under which Markle has executive produced several documentary series, including “Polo” and “Live to Lead,” as well as her lifestyle series “With Love, Meghan,” which premiered its second season this past summer.
Reflecting on her career shift, Markle expressed in a previous interview that stepping back from acting was a new chapter for her. “I’ve ticked this box, and I feel very proud of the work I’ve done there,” she shared, indicating her commitment to her new role as part of a team with Harry after their decision to step back from royal duties in 2020.
Although Amazon MGM declined to comment, the anticipation surrounding Markle’s return to acting, however brief, has generated excitement among fans and industry watchers alike, marking a potential reentry into the entertainment landscape for the Duchess of Sussex.
