Meredith Maines, the chief communications officer for Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, has announced her departure after nearly ten months in the role. Initially hired in late February, Maines was responsible for overseeing the couple’s communications across their nonprofit initiatives, business ventures, and public image. She will continue in her position until the new year to ensure a smooth transition.
A spokesperson for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex confirmed Maines’ exit, expressing gratitude for her contributions, while Maines herself reflected positively on her time with the couple, stating, “I have the utmost gratitude and respect for the couple and the team, and the good they are doing in the world.”
Maines’ departure marks another change in the Sussexes’ communications team, which has seen significant turnover since the couple stepped back from royal duties in early 2020. Previous exits include global press secretary Ashley Hansen and three additional communications staff members earlier this year. Notably, the couple’s communications strategy has evolved, with Liam Maguire, director of communications for the UK and Europe, consolidating leadership responsibilities.
Prior to joining the Sussexes, Maines had a robust career, including roles at Google, Hulu, and Lightspeed Venture Partners. Her diverse experience in tech and venture capital was initially met with some skepticism but was later recognized as a strength in addressing high-stakes projects and managing complex communication needs.
As the Sussexes continue to navigate public perception, it appears they are looking to streamline their communications strategy. With no immediate plans to replace Maines, Maguire is set to expand his role as lead communications director, indicating a shift towards a more unified approach in their outreach efforts. This decision may facilitate more consistent messaging as the couple continues their philanthropic endeavors.
