The Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (Pam) and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (Unido) have embarked on a collaborative journey towards a greener and more integrated Mediterranean region. During the third Economic Forum in Marrakech, hosted by Pam and led by Deputy Giulio Centemero, representatives from both organizations signed a memorandum of understanding that marks the beginning of a new phase of strategic cooperation.
The agreement’s primary goal is to promote zero-impact industrial policies, aligning with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Central to this initiative is the dissemination of innovative technologies and the enhancement of best practices to support the dual green and digital transition, as well as the integration of decarbonization targets into national and regional agendas.
The significance of strengthening public-private partnerships is also highlighted, as they are recognized as a crucial lever for addressing environmental and economic challenges.
Beyond the energy-climate nexus, the memorandum outlines a broad framework for cooperation across key sustainable development sectors, including support for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), the promotion of trade and investment, access to credit, and economic recovery in the post-pandemic era.
Moreover, the memorandum emphasizes high-level institutional advocacy, with the Director-General of Unido participating in the annual Pam Economic Forum. Through this alliance, the Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly aims to play a “central role” in fostering stronger political will and accelerating the adoption of inclusive, impactful energy and climate policies across its member countries.
This collaboration holds promise for a sustainable future in the Mediterranean, emphasizing the importance of united efforts in addressing pressing environmental and economic issues while paving the way for innovative solutions.
